| What is yoga?
The word “yoga” comes from the Sanskrit root “yuj,”
which means “to join” or “to yoke.” Simply
put, yoga means “union.” Yoga is an ancient art based
on a harmonizing system of development for the body, mind and spirit.
What is Vinyasa Yoga?
Vinyasa Yoga employs an uninterrupted and guided flow of
postures. Each series of movements flows one into another, with
emphasis on mindfulness, breathing and feeling. This style of
yoga develops into a high-energy workout to generate and sustain
body heat for healing and therapeutic benefits.
Vinyasa Yoga has at times been called meditation in motion,
going beyond mere physical exercise and helping one realign with
the flow of nature. With continued practice, you will begin to
understand how to move out of the physical pain and “get
out of your head,” so to speak. Vinyasa Yoga reduces
mechanical stresses on the physical body and alleviates emotional
stresses on the mind.
What is my yoga philosophy?
First of all, I believe the practice of yoga makes the body strong
and flexible. It also provides a myriad of health benefits –
improving the functioning of the respiratory, circulatory, digestive,
and hormonal systems. Your yoga practice realigns and rebalances
your body on a regular basis. Over time, you will find that injuries
and illnesses decline. Taking care of your body is by far the
best medicine there is. Don’t wait for something major to
happen to you physically or emotionally before you decide to do
something about it.
Second, and most importantly, the ultimate aim of yoga is one
of self-development and self-realization. Yoga brings about emotional
stability and clarity of mind. It teaches you to respond to life
as opposed to reacting. Instead of facing the individual moments
of each day with a “knee jerk” reaction you will be
able to deal with just one moment. As you begin to develop a clear,
unobstructed and focused attention to the present, you will focus
the mind, relax your body and experience all the present moment
has to offer.
Your body, mind and spirit are unique. I believe yoga is what you want
and need it to be for yourself. Rather than teaching a predetermined
series of poses to everyone the same way all the time, I help you gain
a fundamental knowledge of the asanas (poses) and vinyasas (flows),
empowering you to reach your full potential. From time to time, I may
use gentle adjustments and posture modifications to help create a safe
and supportive learning environment. |
